Samos
Samos is one of the beautiful islands of Eastern Aegean. The island is well known for its lush green natural surroundings, fishing villages and wonderful beaches. Here is where the goddess Hera, wife of Zeus was born, the famous astrophysicist Aristarchus and the great mathematician Pythagoras first saw the light of day. Samos has sights and archaeological treasures to discover including the ancient Pythagorio, Heraion and the Therma Baths. It is believed that the locals built the Sancturary of Heraion to honor Hera as the goddess of Samos. Vathy or Samos Town is the capital and main port of the island, it is one of the oldest regions of Samos in Greece displaying some old Venetian and neoclassic buildings as well as modern ones. There are variety of beaches because of the size of the island, both secluded and organized. Popular beaches are Kokkari, Lemonakia and Potami. It is possible for a day trip sail to Kusadasi whereas Samos is very close to the shores of Turkey.
►Local products of the island include Samian sweet wine, thyme honey, virgin olive oil and bourekia (a dish made from handmade dough wrapped with a mixture of pumpkin, onions, feta cheese and olive oil).
