Athens Churches - The Holy Apostles Church in Athens, Greece is located on the western side of the Ancient Agora of Athens and was constructed in the mid-10th century. This church is of great significance as it is the only monument, aside from the Temple of Hephaestus, that has remained undamaged since its foundation. It is noteworthy for its unique architecture which marks the beginning of the "Athenian type," combining the simple four-pier with the cross-in-square forms. The altar and floor are made of marble and the floor plan features a cross with apses on four sides, supported by four columns that uphold the dome. Many noteworthy wall paintings from the 17th century have been preserved within the walls of this church.
