Meteora Monasteries - The Great Meteoron Monastery in Meteora, Greece is a historic and remarkable site. Established by Saint Athanasios Meteorites, a scholar-monk of Mount Athos, the monastery dates back to 1340 AD. Its first church, Theomitoros, was built by Saint Athanasios and his 14 fellow monks. Later, the founder constructed another church, which became the Catholicon of the monastery and gave it its name. The second proprietor, Ioasaf (Ioannis Uros), was the son of the Serbian-Greek king Symeon Uros Paleologos and supported the monastery financially.

Once accessible only by wooden ladders, ropes, and nets, the monastery can now be reached by climbing 146 stairs built in 1923.
