Rethymnon Museums - The Wax Museum of Rethymno, Crete can be found in the charming village of Zoniana, situated 650m above sea level on the slopes of Mount Idi, the highest mountain of Crete. Conveniently located between Rethymnon Town (45km) and Heraklion Town (43km), Zoniana makes for a perfect excursion from either town. The museum, located at the heart of the village, was established in 1998 by Mr. Dionysis Potamianos, a highly skilled painter and sculptor from Athens. Over a span of 40 years, Mr. Potamianos and his wife created a collection of 87 natural-size wax figures that are on display at the museum. In addition to the wax figures, the museum showcases an extensive collection of coins and bank notes from different historical periods, including the Turkish occupation, the period of the Cretan Autonomy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You'll also find a vast collection of drachmas, which was Greece's official currency before it was replaced by the euro in 2002. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this unique museum during your next visit to Crete.
