The White Mountains in West Crete, also known as Lefka Ori, are a prominent feature of the region, occupying a significant portion of its center. The mountains are composed of limestone and are called White Mountains because they remain snow-covered until late spring. During summer, the limestone’s reflection of the sun’s rays makes the mountain summits appear white as well. Boasting around 50 gorges, the White Mountains are famous for the Samaria Gorge. Additionally, the mountains feature high plateaux in their center, with Omalos Plateau being the most popular at an elevation of 1100m. Access to the White Mountains is limited, with only a few roads leading to the region, including the road to Omalos and the entrance of Samaria Gorge and the road to Chora Sfakion via Askifou Plateau. For the true White Mountains experience, hiking is highly recommended.
