Rhodes Churches - The Panagia Tsambika Monastery in Rhodes, Greece is situated on a hilltop with stunning views of the sea and surrounding areas, just 25 kilometres south of Rhodes Town between Kolymbia and Archangelos. First constructed in antiquity as an altar to the goddess Artemis, the monastery was later rebuilt in 1770 by a monk. Built in traditional Dodecanesian architecture with hollow roof tiles, the temple's pebble and shell floor and the yard are adorned with historical icons dating back to the 19th century. The monastery is named after the word "tsamba," meaning spark in the local dialect, after a local shepherd discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary on the cliff where the old monastery was later built. The miraculous icon of Panagia Tsambika is believed to be particularly effective for women who struggle with infertility, and many women offer the icon of Panagia child dolls as a result. As an island protector, the Panagia Tsambika Monastery is highly revered, and many locals are named Tsambikos for men and Tsambika for women. Today, visitors can find the new monastery on the road connecting Archangelos to Rhodes Town.
