Church of Panagia in Folegandros, Greece
The church of Panagia is the largest of the island of Folegandros dedicated to Virgin Mary. It is built on a rocky hill above Hora on the foundations of an ancient temple. It is an impressive whitewashed church that displays an ancient inscription, sculpture and statue bases in the courtyard of the interior of the church. The icon of Virgin Mary inside the church is believed that helped the residents. History tells that in 1790 pirates were getting ashore and the residents went to the church to pray to Virgin Mary for protection, then a strong wind blew and drowned them. The locals consider Virgin Mary the protector of the island.
