Heraklion Churches & Monasteries - Moni Kalivianis, located near Mires and Festos, is a breathtaking monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, combining Christian faith with social service. The monastery stands at an impressive 80 metres above sea level and dates back to the 14th century. It is believed that the original church was built by a Venetian lord and dedicated to Panagia Kaliviani. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed by the Turks in 1821. However, a miraculous event occurred when local residents found an old icon of the Virgin Mary in the old abandoned temple. Despite Turkish conquerors inflicting punishment and hardship, believers from all across Crete flocked to worship and pray to this miraculous image. Since 1865, the monastery has been reopened and continues to stand strong as a symbol of religious devotion in Heraklion, Crete.
