Rhodes Sights & Monuments - As you walk up the street of the Knights in Rhodes, Greece, you will come across the Grand Master's Palace, a historical gem that also houses the Byzantine Museum. Situated at the top and to the right of the street, the palace is surrounded by ruins from different historical periods, including the remnants of the Catholic Church of St. John.

Originally built below the Acropolis of Ancient Rhodes, where the Temple of the Sun God once stood, the palace has undergone several transformations throughout the centuries. It served as the Byzantine palace in the 7th century before being rebuilt by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century as the Grand Master's residence and administrative center. Sadly, it was destroyed in 1856 by a large explosion of gunpowder that was hidden in the basement of St. John's Church.

However, the palace was restored to its former glory in 1940 by the Italians, who used the original drawings to rebuild it. The Grand Master's Palace holds significant historical importance, having hosted the summit of the EEC in 1988 and continues to host exhibitions and cultural events from time to time. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this fascinating palace during your visit to Rhodes, Greece.
