Naxos Sights & Monuments - The Temple of Apollo in Naxos, Greece is a remarkable 6th-century monument constructed of Naxian marble. Comprising of four mammoth monoliths, each over 6 meters in length and weighing around 20 tonnes, this temple was started by the tyrant Lygdamis in 530 B.C. Although never finished, this temple holds mythical significance and its rectangular shape is oriented towards the island of Delos, possibly linking it to the god Apollo.
During the early Christian period, the temple was transformed into a basilica church, a common practice of the time, and was preserved until the Venetian Rule. The castle’s construction utilized several of the temple’s marble parts. Legend has it that Theseus abandoned Ariadne on the islet of Palatia, and Dionysus later rescued her.
