Corfu Sights & Monuments - The Old Fortress in Corfu, Greece is an iconic castle that sits atop a rocky peninsula, jutting out into the sea. Originally known as the Sea Tower, the fortress was built during the Byzantine period and later fortified by the Venetians from 1402-1797. The fortifications included two enclosure walls and a moat that separated the peninsula from the island. Below the castle lies an intricate network of arched tunnels connecting to the top of the rock. The castle was once used by military, political, and aristocratic personnel, but unfortunately, none of the original buildings have survived. Instead, the buildings we see today were constructed by the British long after the Old Fortress was built. Despite centuries of occupation, the Greek flag was finally raised over the Old Fortress in 1864. Visit the Old Fortress in Corfu, Greece for a glimpse into the island's rich history.
