Heraklion Sights & Monuments - Vathypetro Archanes in Heraklion Crete is a fascinating complex of buildings from the Minoan era. This historic site is located just five kilometers south of Archanes, nestled at the base of the majestic Mount Iuktas. Although Vathypetro has been known to archaeologists since the mid-20th century, it wasn't until Marinatos uncovered important findings that the site became famous. Today, experts have painstakingly restored parts of the buildings based on their own knowledge and the works of their predecessors. According to historians, Vathypetro was originally designed as a palatial building, but was abandoned after being damaged by powerful earthquakes. After the destruction of 1550 BC, the south sector of the building, which includes one of the oldest wine presses, was rebuilt as a functional farmhouse and industrial center. This section was ultimately destroyed around 1470 BC. Visit Vathypetro Archanes in Heraklion Crete to step back in time and explore a piece of ancient history.
