Gournes

Visit Gournes in Heraklion, Crete, located just 15 kilometers east of the city and situated between Kokkini Hani and Gouves. Named after the Greek word "gourna" meaning "basin", Gournes was once abundant with watering places. While big hotels are scarce, there are plenty of charming small hotels, tourist apartments, and rental rooms to choose from. In the late fifties, the American Air Force communications (no planes) base opened in Gournes, transforming the once-sleepy village into a bustling town. Since the base closed, Gournes has continued to develop with a school, gymnasium, municipal town hall, and exhibition center.
