Churches & Monasteries in Naxos
Naxos is home to some of the most beautiful Churches & Monasteries that are nestled in picturesque rural surroundings. One of the most notable churches to visit is Panagia Mirtiodiotissa, which was built at the old port to protect and regulate ships entering and leaving the harbor. Another must-see is Panagia Drosiani, one of Naxos' oldest churches with stunning frescoes that are said to be some of the oldest in the Balkans. Drossia, which means "cool" in Greek, got its name from the belief that the Virgin Mary blessed the region with cold, pure streams. For a breathtaking view of the sea, head to the Monastery of Fotodotis, which translates to "Christ who gives light". Legend has it that a Byzantine princess in distress at sea saw a light emanating from the monastery and was saved.
